Ubuntu 11.04 officially switches default media player to Banshee

Among the changes slated for Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal was the replacement of another long-time default application. With recent releases, we've seen Empathy take over instant messaging duties and Shotwell inserted to handle photo management. It's also been discussed for quite some time that Canonical should, perhaps, pull the pin on the Rhythmbox audio player.

That's finally happened, as current builds of Ubuntu 11.04 have finally made the switch to Banshee. If you're not familiar with Banshee, it's a full-featured media player. It supports a number of audio and video formats, can sync with Android and iOS devices, offers built-in MP3 purchases via Amazon and eMusic, and sports Last.fm and Wikipedia integration.

OMG! Ubuntu ran a poll a few months ago, and user preference was pretty evenly divided between Rhythmbox and Banshee, but Canonical's Mark Shuttleworth has previously stated that "Ubuntu is not a Democracy." If they've decided to add Banshee to the mix, it's getting added -- but anyone who might be upset by that probably knows how to quickly remove it and install Rhythmbox via a terminal session anyway.

Future iPad OS Update Revives Screen-Lock Switch

The iPad’s screen-lock switch, previously removed in a software update, will be back soon by popular demand. Apple moments ago released a beta version of iOS 4.3, the next version of its mobile operating system. Some beta testers have noticed that a menu option allows iPad customers to set the physical switch to lock the screen [...]

OwnEdition: Customizable Watches For You And Yours

In the land of customizable merchandise, the bar is set pretty low. You can get a hankie customized or one of those squeeze balls but what about a $3,000 watch? OwnEdition, as ham-handed as their website is, offers customized watches in multiple styles and all of them include automatic Valjoux chronograph movements. Customization has its limits, however. Using the fairly robust Flash front-end, you select your watch, add a custom engraving (I selected "CORN NINJA" for obvious reasons) and place your order. The watches come in steel and gold finishes and the chronographs, at least are quite handsome. What the site could have done without are the handsome gentlemen offering each other a handsome watch while standing around awkwardly in suits. A worse example of clip-art selection I have not seen.

Canabalt and Flixel for iOS open-sourced, and the last day of Indie iPhone Holiday Sale

Canabalt, which shot to fame in 2009 and popularized the 'auto running' mechanic seen in games throughout 2010 (such as Solipskier), has just been released as an open source project under the MIT license. Curiously, it is the iOS version of the game that has been released, not the original Flash version.

Canabalt, if you haven't played it (play the Flash version now!), is a game all about collisions, and moving at incredibly fast speeds. Developers (or curious players) might be interested in Tuning Canabalt (part 1 & part 2), a series of blog posts about the fine-tuning of Canabalt's game mechanics. (The third part hasn't been published yet, incidentally.) The open-sourcing of Canabalt means that developers can finally take a look at the clever code behind the game.

Interestingly, this release, despite it being dressed up as Canabalt being open-sourced, seems to be more about the game library behind Canabalt: Flixel. Flixel is an open-source library for Flash game development, but it was ported to iOS for Canabalt. While there are no shortage of game engines and libraries for iOS, Flixel will make a great addition.

In other news, until the end of today, you can take advantage of the Indie iPhone Holiday Sale. Six great games are available for just $0.99, and 30% of revenue (after Apple's cut) will be given to the Child's Play charity. If you want to get your hands on a cheap copy of Canabalt, Solipskier, Drop7, Eliss, Osmos, or Spider, now's your chance -- over $30,000 has been raised for Child's Play so far!

The Gloves Are Off: Google Chrome Browser Will Drop Support For H.264 Video Codec

In the world of online video, there is a battle brewing over the next dominant standard for online video, especially on HTML5 Web pages. Today, Google took the gloves off and declared that it will soon stop supporting the H.264 video codec in its Chrome browser. Instead, it will only support open-source technologies such as its own WebM initiative (with its VP8 codec) and the open-source Theora video codec, which is used by Firefox. You could see this a mile away. Google announced the WebM project last May, along with other partners Mozilla and Opera (Apple, which relies on H.264 in its mission to squash Flash, was conspicuously absent). The H.264 codec is owned by the MPEG-LA consortium, and may in the future require a license. Although the consortium was pressured into promising that H.264 streaming would be free forever that is only for non-commercial Internet video.

Meetup Perks Helps Local Groups Find Local Sponsors

Everybody, it seems, is getting in on the local offers game. Now, so is Meetup, one of the most local sites out there, with Meetup Perks. Meetup Perks just launched today, with the aim to make it easier for local businesses to find groups to sponsor by offering discounts and other deals. There are about 80,000 groups on Meetup, including everything from tech meetups and car enthusiasts to hiking and cooking groups. About 30,000 businesses already offer some of these groups deals, discounts, and other perks from local businesses. But up until now these sponsorships have all been informal and done directly between the groups and local merchants. With Meetup Perks, Meetup is creating a self-serve platform that makes it easier for merchants to find groups to sponsor and for group organizers to opt into receiving deal offers.
